Team Basics

Fall try-outs generally attract over 100 riders who are judged and selected by the coach. All levels of ability are represented--beginner walk-trot to open equitation on the flat and over fences. All competitors ride and show hunt seat equitation. Riders are drilled in the many aspects of communication between horse and rider. Members are required to attend at least one lesson a week where they receive instruction according to their needs and may have the option to ride independently to improve their technique and to practice what they are learning. Team members participate in five to ten regularly scheduled point shows a year, as well as the Regional, Zone, and National Finals.

The Penn State Equestrian Team participates in Zone III Region 1 along with:

Bucknell University

Dickinson University

Gettysburg University

Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Wilson College

Juniata College

Susquehanna University

Franklin & Marshall College

Lebanon Valley

York College

The Penn State Equestrian Team has always been represented at the invitational horse shows, such as the annual Tournament of Champions,  which is a tribute to both the consistency and strength of the program. Team members do pay a major portion of the expenses involved, such as lessons, riding attire and horse show fees. To help alleviate financial pressures on individual members, a number of fund raising activities are conducted throughout the year. A major event held each year is the hosting of two Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) sanctioned horse show at Eastwood Farms.
